We have moved from a Gutenberg world to a Google world (Sweet). Things are changing rapidly and that includes people’s expectations of what happens when we gather as the church.
Here are 3 levels of a transition to a more collaborative type of preaching where people contribute instead of being passive consumers of a scripted stage show (spectators of a spectacle).
- Any questions?
- Turn to 2 other people…
- Dialogue/Conversation
This mirrors the move from Church 1.0 to Church 2.0 but can still be done in a 1.0 context.

Interesting, I see how this brings much more for lack of a better word “buy in” for the church goers as the gathering is much more participatory in content. I recently went to a traditional church which I would equate to my parents church, you know the standard, I then went to another church that I would say had mastered the “spectacle” you know videos, about what’s coming up, a worship team that was almost a real rock band with lights, fog and the whole nine yards. But ultimately I felt the same after both services, detached, concern about tithes, and controlled content. The traditional church I was an outsider. the mastered spectacle church I was just a number in one of there 3 church services that day. I feel you are right, people want to be apart of the process, perhaps guided collective thinking is the future of the church or at least a part of it. Any how this only my 2nd time ever responding to someone online in a open forum, kind of interesting in its self. ( I am in fact a younger person, just have stayed away from media in the past)

Sorry for the delayed response – I have been on hiatus. BUT I LOVED your note. I would be very interested in a follow up. Have you attended any more services? How did they go?
I think about this all the time and I am so happy that you found this helpful. -Bo

I did not attend any more of the service at either the “standard” church or the mastered “spectical” I did however attend a cell group at the “spectical” church. It was odd, they leader had a outline from the church and a time line on how long to give for prayers and what verses to reference all based around the recent sermon series. While I think the intent of the cell leader was to follow God, I could not help but to feel this was far to controlled nothing organic no openess to the spirt of god. I have spent lots of time administering training materials for companies and this was it. This church felt like a franchise aproach to God. I am currenty attending and participating in a local church that I feel that the spirt has lead me too and that God is building the church to do good things, the core of the gospel. LOVE OTHERS. I grew up in the church and have seen many different kinds of churches there is something good going on here that isn’t the Norm for churches at least in my experience.
Any how thank you for the response back. I was so excited to get it and almost lept for joy. God bless
