I am preaching through the Gospel of Mark this year and I am up to chapter 13 where Jesus turns on the doom and gloom. Many people have been told that this is about our time (currentist) or about the near future (futurist) but do not know about the preterist perspective that everything that Jesus was predicting about actually happened in the first century.
I made this short video about my plan to address it in my sermon:
Race is a construct that configures us as humans.
This short sermon talks about how we are knit together as a society.
You can also download the free ‘Whiteness Workshop’ if you are interested.
Let me know if this was helpful or how I can make it better.
My friend Tad DeLay has written a second book, The Cynic and The Fool. I was first introduced to this concept by Tad a couple of years ago. I immediately asked him to come to the Loft LA as my conversation partner to talk about it. It was controversial to say the least.
I have held onto a very small part of the concept (that people are comfortable these days in the role of the cynic but that they want their leaders to be fools) and have radically changed my approach to ministry to account for it.
This weekend I will be presenting this concept in Sunday School, as part of the series ‘5 Favorite Ideas’, so I made a 10 min video to share and get the conversation rolling.
I would love your comments, questions, and concerns.
I would also love if you would share this with any leaders or pastors that you know. I want to have a much bigger conversation about the church being a different way in the world.
10 minutes on End Times!
Here are 4 things that you will want to reference:
1) Best book on Revelation: Chalice Commentary by Farmer – it will become your favorite
2) Partial reasoning of the 1968-1973 change: Continue reading “10 Minutes on End Times”
Religion is a tricky subject. Many assume that they know what it means while others have decided to reduce religion to fantasy in order to dismiss it.
The hope is to move from an either-or model of ‘true’ or ‘false’ to a “web of meaning”.
My theory is that at least 5 elements contribute the web of meaning. This moves us away from an either/or model of ‘antiquated myth’ or ‘divine revelation’.
5 elements are:
This last one is always the most difficult. Those who are sure (fundamentalist, foundational) dislike the ‘potential’ qualifier. Those who dismiss religion are suspicious of the potential of something ‘real’.
Once we get rid of the false either/or choices we are free to think about what is going on in religion.
I look forward to your comments, questions and concerns.
